Weekly Update 　2016.12.16

For four years Eastern Aleppo has been a stronghold for the Syrian opposition and has held out against several separate Syrian government advances, countless airstrikes and barrel bombs. On Tuesday, Russia declared that pro-government forces had taken all of Eastern, opposition-controlled Aleppo.

アレッポ東部はアサド政権の無数の空爆と樽爆弾による侵攻に晒されてきたが、反政府軍の牙城として4年もの間死守してきた場所だ。それが12月13日にアサド政権側が東アレッポ地区を奪回したとロシアが宣言した。

The fall of opposition-controlled Aleppo city marks a tipping point in the conflict in Syria, now in its sixth year. Despite the siege and years of devastating attacks, hundreds of thousands of Eastern Aleppo residents never fled their city, in a show of support for what began as a civil uprising in 2011. Aleppo native and Karam Foundation CEO and cofounder Lina Sergie Attar told Syria Deeply that watching the city fall was “witnessing a real death of the revolution as we have known it.”

反政府軍が6年間制圧していたアレッポの陥落はシリア内戦の転換点になるだろう。2011年に始まった市民蜂起の波の中で、アレッポ東部の住民はアサド政権からの包囲網や度重なる攻撃に屈することなく、今までその場を離れて逃げることは無かった。生粋のアレッポ人でカラム財団のCEOリナ・セルギエさんは本誌取材に対し「アレッポの陥落は革命の死を意味する」と肩を落とした。

On Thursday, Moscow announced that, along with Turkey, it had brokered a deal with rebels to evacuate the city. That night, evacuations of civilians and fighters from Eastern Aleppo began, but the situation in the city continued to be perilous for residents. On Friday, only 6,000 residents had been transferred out of the city when the Russian military claimed the process was completed and that all women and children had been evacuated, despite the fact that some 40,000 civilians, including many wounded, remain trapped in the area. “Aleppo is now a synonym for hell,” U.N. secretary-general Ban Ki-moon told reporters in New York on Friday.

12月15日に（アサド政権を強烈に支援している）ロシアは（従来反アサドの）トルコと「反政府軍がアレッポ東部から撤退する取引を仲介した」と協同声明を出した。同夜、東アレッポから一般市民や戦闘員が引き揚げ始めたが、危険な情勢が続いた。16日にロシア軍が「すべての女生と子供の退去が完了した」と発表した時にはまだ、多数の負傷者を含む40,000人の一般市民が残されている状況だった。16日に国連事務総長の潘基文氏は「現在のアレッポは地獄の様相を呈している」と記者に話している。
